A Radiant Land Kii Peninsula by Shunji Dodo 楽土紀伊半島 百々俊二

Shunji Dodo is a photographer born in Osaka in 1947. He is a photographer who has gained recognition for his large-format photographs of his hometown Osaka, and is also active in photography education, serving as principal of the Osaka College of Photography in 1972.
This book is a collection of black-and-white photographs of the Kii Peninsula taken over a period of four years, following his subsequent move to Nara.
Raku-do” means ”a land where there is no suffering and where one can lead an enjoyable life. The impressive gazes of the people and the vast nature of the peninsula, which seems to be on the borderline between the unconscious and the conscious, appeal directly to this. We would like to burn into our eyes the “lost era of Japan” that Dodo attempted to recapture in the Kii Peninsula.
This work won the 1996 Photographic Society of Japan Award. His “Sennen Rakudo” (2000), also shot on the Kii Peninsula, won the 24th Ina Nobuo Award.

1947年大阪生まれの写真家、百々俊二。故郷の大阪を大判カメラで撮影した写真で評価を受けた彼は、1972年に大阪写真専門学校の校長を務めるなど、写真教育面でも活躍している写真家である。
本書は、彼がその後奈良に移住したのをきっかけに、4年の歳月をかけて紀伊半島を撮影したモノクロ写真集。
「楽土」というのは「苦しみがない、楽しい生活ができる土地」。無意識と意識の境界線にあるような、印象的な人々の眼差し、そして広大な半島の自然は、直にそれを訴えかけている。百々が紀伊半島で捉え直そうとした、「喪失した日本の時代」を目に焼き付けたい。
1996年日本写真協会年度賞受賞作。同じく紀伊半島を撮影した『千年楽土』(2000年)では第24回伊奈信男賞を受賞している。
